NEWS - Congratulations to the Montreal Chest Institute’s (MCI) during a Ministerial visit to the extended care unit

On Tuesday, May 17, 2011, the MCI received notice from the Ministère de la Santé et des Services Sociaux (MSSS) that a visit to the MCI would be conducted by members of the MSSS, the Agence de santé et des services Sociaux de Montréal and a representative from the Conseil pour la protection des malades. The MSSS representatives came to see the 35 residents of the MCI’s extended care unit. They were touched by the level of specialized care this clientele requires as well as by the fact that, despite the severity of their conditions and the physically limited space, the care team and family members managed to personalize each resident’s environment in order to, as much as possible, create a living space that reflects the individual’s personal tastes. The Ministry representatives also remarked on and were impressed by the dignity and respect with which staff interacted with residents. Management would like to congratulate all healthcare providers of the MCI’s extended care unit for their devotion, their humane approach to care, and the exceptional contribution they make to the residents’ wellbeing. THANK YOU!

Often when I arrive at the MCI I am very sick, usually in a crisis. I have chronic bronchiectasis and asthma. But I am always comforted by the fact that I know I will be greeted by staff who know me by name and who are always there to meet my needs, often beyond what is required. The care I receive there is exceptional—I always feel surrounded by family. And it doesn’t matter who the staff is, they all have that caring attitude. I don’t know what I would do without them.

—Linda Harty, MCI patient for the past 15 years
